00:27:45 Chain|Q hi
00:28:45 Chain|Q i installed os4 update 4 on an empty 40gb hdd. installation went all OK. still, when i try to boot from the hdd, kernel gets loaded, and then i get empty black screen. hints? :)
00:29:00 Chain|Q according to my monitor, it's 640x480/60hz
00:29:13 Chain|Q ah, the machine is ua1/gx
00:30:10 AC how long did you wait?
00:30:58 Chain|Q minutes? :)
00:31:27 AC ohh
00:33:28 AC if it only were 20-30 sec. it chould be roadshow blocking bootup
00:38:37 Chain|Q what's even more strange
00:38:41 Chain|Q i can get into early startup menu
00:38:48 Chain|Q but when i click boot with nostartup
00:38:52 Chain|Q again, only black screen
00:38:54 Chain|Q wtf?! :)
00:40:36 AC sounds like kickstart problem, did you try the others boot options (1-4) ?
00:41:46 Chain|Q no
00:41:49 Chain|Q let's try
00:50:10   <-- wegsterOS4 has quit (Quit: bah, I'm leaving)
00:50:15 Chain|Q disabled jit
00:50:17 Chain|Q same
00:51:04 AC hmm
00:51:36 AC and you can boot the cd ?
00:51:53 Chain|Q yeah
00:51:54 Chain|Q hmm
00:51:55 Chain|Q strange
00:52:01 Chain|Q managed to get boot with nostartup screen
00:52:09 Chain|Q no c:, empty sys: (!!)
00:53:07 Chain|Q but when i boot from CD, it's OK
00:53:12 Chain|Q or at least looks OK
00:53:54   --> wegsterOS4 (~wegster@2d996ff7.3d716d1f.res.rr.com) has joined #amigadev
00:54:31 AC the only thing I can think of is that you have a damaged kickstart module
00:55:46 AC did you remember to update the slb on the hd?
00:56:01 Chain|Q yea
00:56:02 Chain|Q i did
00:56:03 Chain|Q of course
00:56:07 Chain|Q heh
00:56:07 Chain|Q fun
00:56:30 Chain|Q selected bootdisk DH0 by hand in early startup menu
00:56:32 Chain|Q pressed boot
00:56:34 Chain|Q and it booted
00:57:04 AC okey, really wierd
00:57:09 Chain|Q ok, let's figure out why it doesn't want to use the drive by default
01:00:33 number6 Chain|Q: Only one partition? Boot priority set ok?
01:00:48 Chain|Q three partitions
01:00:50 Chain|Q only one bootable
01:00:53 Chain|Q boot pri is 0
01:01:16 number6 ok
01:01:32 number6 FFS or SFS?
01:02:35 Chain|Q SFS
01:03:38 number6 blocksize normal 512?
01:03:48 ssolie I'd suspect the uboot vars myself..
01:04:32 ssolie or maybe two volumes with the same boot pri?
01:04:47 Chain|Q hmmm
01:04:50 Chain|Q this is black magic
01:04:54 Chain|Q now boots
01:04:59 Chain|Q even after cold reboot
01:05:01 ssolie lol
01:05:08 Chain|Q even after power cycle
01:05:26 Chain|Q ?!?!... ... whatever ;)
01:05:39 ssolie sometimes I've noticed you need to leave the machine off for a minute to totally reset it
01:07:54 number6 Absolutely.
01:08:45 Chain|Q this is beyond me ;) i sucked an hour with this, reinstalled at least 3 times before i was asking for help
01:09:00 Chain|Q thanks anyway, seems to work now
01:11:51 number6 "cold start" is your best friend..."
01:13:47 ssolie number6: actually, a serial cable is your best friend in these situations but we can't expect users to have them ;)
01:14:21 number6 or to have a free port to use them.....
01:15:13 ssolie the whole 'gone dark' problem has always annoyed me.. I've complained before
01:15:45 ssolie you just have no idea what is going on and the only way to find out is via the serial port
01:16:09 ssolie same thing will happen if uboot fails before the vga is activated
01:18:08 ssolie I hope we can focus some attention on this area before the final release
01:19:57 number6 Agreed. Frankly, on my Micro, I think I have only seen "dark" once. I think on "soft" reboot vs "hard".
01:20:21   <-- wegsterOS4 has quit (Quit: "<jahc>: I hope I'm not going to Helgis on you?")

01:32:00 ssolie wegsterOS4: hey
01:32:42 wegsterOS4 hey ssolie how goes it?
01:32:55 ssolie wegsterOS4: great.. I can finally release some s/w :)
01:33:12 wegsterOS4 ssolie: oooh ;-) Hints?
01:33:16 ssolie wegsterOS4: nope
01:33:22 wegsterOS4 lol, shoulda known
01:33:32 wegsterOS4 is it in the News? ;-)
01:33:38 ssolie btw, I noticed a disturbing trend in the forums..
01:33:50 ssolie people are reverting bits of OS4 back to update 3 versions.. very bad idea
01:34:09 wegsterOS4 nod, noticed that, in some cases seems only way around issues though, such as screenblanker etc?
01:34:21 ssolie it isn't a way 'around' though
01:34:49 ssolie not a safe way
01:34:52 wegsterOS4 yes, but without a bgfix or beta to fix it, gotta do something. What else would you suggest?
01:34:58 wegsterOS4 nod, course not, may or may not work
01:35:05 ssolie I'd suggest not doing whatever it is
01:35:24 number6 one things changed affects another thing...affects another thing......
01:35:27 wegsterOS4 think about that onea bit- with no way tofix something broken, ppl are going to try something.
01:35:35 ssolie one guy reverted a1ide.device! oh man...
01:35:44 wegsterOS4 doh, who/why?
01:35:54 ssolie bug fixes.. lots of them
01:36:08 ssolie I don't even want to think about using the old a1ide.device with the new kernel
01:36:14 ssolie boggles the mind
01:36:28 wegsterOS4 number6: normally I'd agree, it's not a good idea b/c no one knows the inter dependencies, but without a 'this will be fixed in near future and made avaialble, don't revert' people are going to try it.
01:36:32 ssolie in any case, what you guys are doing is *not* safe
01:36:54 wegsterOS4 ssolie: so suggestions other than 'ok, it's broken'? ;-)
01:37:05 number6 ssolie: Please leave me out of your sweeping "you guys" statment.
01:37:08 ssolie report it, get advice from the os4 devs (directly or not)
01:37:43 ssolie if a device stops working there is a good reason.. just need time to figure it out
01:37:46 wegsterOS4 ssolie: nod, that's sort of the reason for the big thread, one place to cehck into, but you'll note even in case of rx, olsen hasn't said if a fixed ver will be made abvailable and said to use 68k ver
01:37:54 wegsterOS4 nod
01:38:12   -!- * wegsterOS4 has no desire to revert a core device driver..
01:38:16 ssolie olsen is the dev.. exactly what I said to do :)
01:38:35 wegsterOS4 why not post that 'in the big thread'?
01:38:44 ssolie when you know it is safe, go ahead.. but some of those gusy (not number6) are going too far imho
01:39:02 wegsterOS4 the a1ide.device driver I definitely agee! Others offhand?
01:39:22 ssolie that one just made me shake my head.. haven't noticed any other data destroyer ideas yet tbh
01:39:22 number6 ssolie: How would you feel about a dedicated thread for input from "devs" so people would know the info was "official"?
01:39:41 wegsterOS4 lol good 9appropriate) nae- 'data destroyers' ;-)
01:40:20 number6 btw- I can see some havoc if people replace amipdf and ghostscript with old versions.
01:40:37 ssolie yep, that app has moved way beyond where it was as well
01:40:47 wegsterOS4 ssolie: btw, it wasn't really called out, but the slb IS new on ud4 iso, correct?
01:40:49 ssolie not a data destroyer-type move but not that bright either :)
01:41:01 ssolie yes, the slb is newer
01:41:10 wegsterOS4 number6: amipdf is less likely to have critical system dependencies than a driver, amipdf may be 'improved' but is only an app.
01:41:20 ssolie gives you more info. iirc and fixes something..
01:42:03 ssolie in any case, when you revert a component you get zero support
01:42:26 number6 wegsterOS4: Actually, when someone "replaces" amipdf with an older version and things don't work....it may lead to them replacing "other" things that -might- be harmful. It is the trend, not the exact action.
01:42:28 ssolie unless someone like olsen says it is ok
01:42:48 ssolie number6: yes, it is the trend that worried me the most
01:43:00 wegsterOS4 ssolie: nod, problem is no feedback, nowhere to report 'official' bugs besides the forum, and a lot of devs don't frequent the forums...then there's the whole 'idiot titles' some do as well.
01:43:06 ssolie number6: this didn't work, copy back the old version and see... not a thought to the consequences
01:43:27 number6 ssolie: Exactly.
01:43:35 ssolie make backups! :)
01:43:59 number6 ssolie: I think toaks may have more partitions than I, not too many others?
01:44:07 ssolie too bad the release notes are private, then you would know why this stuff is so dangerous ;)
01:44:51 ssolie stoopid secrecy gets in the way.. sigh
01:45:07 wegsterOS4 ssolie: nod, real relnotes would be....good.
01:45:28 ssolie in the mean time, you'll just have to make lots of backups and trust us from time to time I guess
01:46:42 number6 ssolie: Well, if you have posted these very thoughts for everyone to read, I would agree. Have you?
01:46:44 wegsterOS4 ssolie: global 'trust us' without a comment in forum doesn't work, you know that.
01:46:59 ssolie lesson one: never revert a device driver unless told to :)
01:47:23 wegsterOS4 grin

16:17:18 racs migthymax: hm? :)
16:19:11 migthymax racs: in Sys:Prefs/Font the user can define the defaultf fonts for icons, the system, and the screen font. The system can only be a non-proportional font (aka every character has the same width). And this font i want to get hold on.

17:07:12 number6 kindergipA1: Hi
17:08:59 kindergipA1 hi
17:09:23 kindergipA1 scrolling in wookiechat works
17:09:37 kindergipA1 lost a year or so of stuff and all backups though
17:09:44 number6 Want me to help you crash wookie?
17:09:59 kindergipA1 no....lost a partition on reinstall
17:10:03 kindergipA1 clean install
17:10:06 number6 Gak!
17:10:26 kindergipA1 juist remembering what was on it.....that cannot be replaced
17:11:06 kindergipA1 passwords are a good one.....
17:11:13 kindergipA1 for software and stuff....
17:12:06 number6 I did the following: (1)mastered the ISO and copied the contents to a partition. (2)installed the same ISO onto yet another partition (3)compared files from both (4)Set the partition to boot today (5)copied over a few files and everything works so far (6)undoubtedly I will have a few config and prefs yet to transfer.
17:13:10 number6 So far: Ran an MP3 through (1)datatypes (2)Tunenet (3)ANR (4)AmigaAmp (5)Songplayer...all fine
17:13:22 kindergipA1 heh.....took backup of everything in nice neat order to 3rd partition DH2
17:13:31 number6 Also played vid with: (1)MPlayer (2)FroggerNG....both fine
17:13:34 kindergipA1 then promptly lost DH2
17:14:06 kindergipA1 DH0 & DH1 already reformatted for configuration and install
17:14:15 kindergipA1 :/
17:14:16 number6 kindergipA1: When I got this machine initially from softhut, I demanded two drives, which I keep basically cloned.
17:14:31 kindergipA1 you are smart I am dumb
17:14:55 number6 No. I have lost plenty through the years as well. Just not this time...
17:15:48 kindergipA1 I just found my newsrog install on a CD backup from my A3KT days
17:15:56 kindergipA1 it'll have my key
17:17:17 number6 Hmm....one of my sets of partitions (on the two drives) is archive. I always keep a directory for "keys", so they exist there as well as in the program directory or "L:" or whatever.
17:18:05 kindergipA1 heh, just found my pagestream archives for 3.1
17:18:59 kindergipA1 wanna find dopus4 full setup with all the keys programmed....this will make things much faster.....
17:19:10 kindergipA1 does magellan work yet?
17:19:27 number6 It is sometimes hard to do...but look at this as a chance for a "fresh" start. I knew writers who lost their whole novels, but eventually, you come to terms with the loss and write something even better.
17:20:33 number6 I only have the old cover disk version Opus 5.11. I transferred it...but haven't tried to start it yet. As I said, I just activated this partition moments ago.
17:21:47 number6 Main thing I wanted to do was transfer all my prefs and files to use internet. Everything good so far. All screens look the same.
17:22:04 kindergipA1 heh....didn't work for me all that well so I went back to my original DOpus 4 masterpiece
17:22:43 kindergipA1 internet from scratch on OS4 is child's play after doing the distro dance weekly for a couple of years with linux
17:24:46 number6 Do you know if @swoop (and others) are still having trouble with screen. He said he was stuck in 640x480. Mine booted into that also. I fixed it in about 30 seconds.
17:27:55 kindergipA1 mine does what I tell it to now....had the same problem but all apps functioned fine in their screenmodes....workbench was stuck in fake native
17:28:28 number6 Curious. How did you fix yours?
17:28:48 kindergipA1 d'uh....fresh install trashed my archive partition :)
17:29:01 number6 ouch!
17:29:24 kindergipA1 remember ?
17:29:27 kindergipA1 09:10:17] <kindergipA1> no....lost a partition on reinstall
17:29:27 kindergipA1 [09:10:22] <kindergipA1> clean install
17:29:27 kindergipA1 [09:10:25] <number6> Gak!
17:29:27 kindergipA1 [09:10:45] <kindergipA1> juist remembering what was on it.....that cannot be replaced
17:30:00   -!- * kindergipA1 touches sore place number6 keeps poking with his sharp stick
17:30:10 number6 Oh. I thought you meant a "program" partition. Not a "boot" partition. yek!
17:30:25   <-- itix has quit (Quit: switching to windows 95)
17:30:50 kindergipA1 no, it was my whole archived partition.....all of my backups et al
17:31:29 kindergipA1 which means it had all my apps, text archives and everything for 18 years of the Amiga......
17:31:46 number6 kindergipA1: Want to borrow a pack of razor blades? I've done this before too....
17:31:50 kindergipA1 only the last year of mail, news, and art and such is destroyed
17:32:39 number6 kindergipA1: I lost my whole "life" too before. I know the feeling. Took me a day or so to re-evaluate. Eventually I "carried on".
17:33:21 kindergipA1 I'm not desperate or anything ....mostly just sad at the thought of stuff I won't remember.....
17:33:37 kindergipA1 like the address of the guy that owes me $300 for my tower
17:34:19 kindergipA1 as for carrying on...well internet first then collecting various things to restore useability to a clean install
17:34:45 kindergipA1 done yesterday after disaster and today cleaning crowded computer room to find all my backup cd roms
17:35:28 kindergipA1 with particular interest in DOpus4 to restart speed of searches on CDroms for needed thingies
17:35:40 number6 kindergipA1: I lost all my art (anims/lightwave files/etc) and a lot of knowledge type stuff, that will never get passed on.(unless my memory can recall it all)
17:36:25 kindergipA1 yep...but this is only current year stuff....I can make lists.....like my dad's project for publishing....his mushroom field guide.....
17:36:36 kindergipA1 trust me dad - computer is the way to go.... :)
17:36:57 number6 Yep.
17:37:01 kindergipA1 let me just download pagestream again after I get Deron to send me my password.....
17:37:22 kindergipA1 and then find the excel files your text is typed in and scrape the text out of them.....
17:37:53 kindergipA1 :)
17:38:15   <-- der_grimm has quit (Quit: der_grimm)
17:38:33 number6 Sheesh! I remember old "8bit" days, when I had to use a "sector" scanner to recoup files. Had to write a lot of utilities myself back then, because very little existed in the marketplace.

17:43:19 zerohero number6: first post, about ibrowse
17:44:33 number6 zerohero: I see it. I gave him the MUI address. Someone else must have given him that, not me.
17:45:19 zerohero number6: it's normally kept up2date, but sometimes i forget
17:46:03 number6 zerohero: I think I know what he did. He went to the "download" page and supplied the "direct link" is all.
17:46:43 zerohero number6: uhm?
17:46:56 zerohero number6: on zerohero.se all links go to zerohero.se, afaik
17:47:41 number6 zerohero: I just went to your download page and "hovered" over the link to that file. It matches.
